How to Test a PPF Sample Roll: 5 Critical Shop Tests Before Placing a Bulk Order

A PPF sample roll is worth testing systematically before it becomes 300 rolls in your warehouse. Five shop tests — requiring no laboratory equipment — differentiate quality film from marginal film before you commit to a bulk order. Here’s the protocol KSB recommends for evaluating any PPF supplier’s sample.


Test 1: Bonnet Panel Stretch and Conformability Test

What it assesses: Film flexibility, conformability to compound curves, self-healing activation, and initial adhesion behaviour.

Setup: A real vehicle bonnet (or a representative compound-curve test panel) cleaned and decontaminated to installation standard.

Procedure:

  1. Cut a section of sample film large enough to cover a challenging curved section (corner, leading edge)
  2. Apply using your standard installation technique and lubricant
  3. Note the working window duration (how long you have to reposition before the film commits)
  4. Note how the film responds to heat when conforming to tight curves — does it stretch without webbing? Does it recover without stress lines?
  5. After 72-hour cure, assess edge adhesion around the curved section

Pass criteria:

  • Working window: 60–120 seconds with standard slip solution
  • Heat conformability: no webbing or visible stress lines when properly heated
  • Edge adhesion after cure: no lifting at any edge

Fail indicators: Film grabs immediately with no working window (difficult installation). Film shows stress lines after heating. Edge lifting within 72 hours.


Test 2: Heat Gun Self-Healing Test

What it assesses: Top coat self-healing performance and healing temperature.

Setup: Cured film sample on a flat glass panel.

Procedure:

  1. Make 5 firm fingernail scratches across the film surface (consistent pressure)
  2. Photograph the scratches with side lighting
  3. Apply heat gun at 60°C surface temperature for 60 seconds
  4. Photograph again
  5. Optionally: repeat at 40°C surface (lower temperature) to test if healing begins at lower temperature

Pass criteria:

  • Light fingernail scratches: 90%+ healed within 60 seconds at 60°C
  • Evidence of healing initiation beginning within 10–15 seconds at 60°C

Fail indicators: No visible healing after 90 seconds at 60°C (no self-healing top coat or crosslink density too high). Permanent clouding at the scratch location (top coat crazing rather than healing).


Test 3: Accelerated Yellowing Field Test (UV Lamp)

What it assesses: Quick field estimate of UV yellowing resistance.

What you need: A 365nm UV lamp (blacklight, widely available from forensics/inspection equipment suppliers, cost $15–$50).

Setup: Film sample on glass, plus a piece of bare glass as baseline.

Procedure:

  1. Place the filmed glass panel under the UV lamp at 10cm distance
  2. Also place an unfilmed glass panel nearby for comparison
  3. Run for 48 hours of continuous UV exposure
  4. Compare the filmed glass colour to the baseline and to the initial photograph

Pass criteria:

  • No visible yellowing after 48 hours of 365nm UV exposure
  • Film colour matches initial photography

Fail indicators: Visible yellowing (yellow or brown tint) developing within 48 hours indicates aromatic TPU or inadequate HALS stabilisation. This film will yellow in real-world conditions within 1–2 years.

Note: 365nm is not the same as the UV-B used in QUV testing, but this field test provides a useful quick discriminator between aliphatic and aromatic TPU — aliphatic shows no visible change; aromatic begins to yellow.


Test 4: Contamination and Hydrophobicity Test

What it assesses: Top coat hydrophobicity, acid resistance, and anti-fouling performance.

Setup: Cured film sample on panel.

Procedure — Part A (Water beading):

  1. Drip 10 drops of clean water onto the film surface
  2. Tilt the panel to 10° and observe
  3. Photograph/video the water bead behaviour

Pass criteria: Water beads into near-spherical droplets and rolls off at 10–15° tilt. Hydrophobic (WCA >100°) film shows this clearly. Standard film shows spreading droplets with less defined beading.

Procedure — Part B (Acid resistance):

  1. Apply 5 drops of dilute citric acid solution (pH 4.0 — easily made from citric acid powder and water)
  2. Leave for 30 minutes at room temperature or 10 minutes at 60°C (more aggressive)
  3. Rinse thoroughly with water and inspect

Pass criteria: No visible etch ring or staining at droplet location.

Procedure — Part C (Bird drop simulation):

  1. Apply a small amount of mustard (similar pH to bird acid — pH 3.5–4.0)
  2. Leave for 30 minutes at 60°C surface (simulate parked-car hot conditions)
  3. Rinse and inspect

Pass criteria: No visible stain after rinsing.


Test 5: Edge Adhesion and Clean Removal Test

What it assesses: Long-term edge adhesion, and clean removal capability (simulated).

Procedure — Edge test:

  1. Apply film to a test panel leaving 3cm edges exposed around the perimeter
  2. After 72 hours cure, apply tape firmly along all four edges and pull sharply
  3. Inspect for film lift following the tape

Pass criteria: No film lift in tape pull test.

Procedure — Removal test:

  1. Heat the panel to 60°C surface temperature with a heat gun
  2. Peel the film at 45° at slow, controlled rate
  3. Inspect the substrate for adhesive transfer

Pass criteria: Film removes in one piece without adhesive transfer to the substrate. Any minor residue removes with IPA wipe.


Documenting Your Sample Evaluation

For each test, document with photos or video before and after. Create a sample evaluation report:

  • Product name, supplier, batch number
  • Results of each test (pass/fail)
  • Comparison against your current reference film

The documentation serves two purposes: it helps you make the go/no-go decision, and it provides evidence if you receive commercial product that doesn’t match the sample.
