1. What’s the difference between safety film and security film?
The terms overlap but describe different performance priorities. “Safety film” typically refers to fragment retention products (4–8 mil) whose primary purpose is preventing glass shard injuries from accidental breakage. “Security film” typically refers to heavier products (8–15 mil) with forced entry delay as the primary function, installed with frame attachment. Most products serve both functions to some degree — the label reflects the primary design intent.
2. Does safety film prevent glass from breaking?
No. Safety film does not make glass impact-resistant. Glass breaks at essentially the same force with or without film. What changes is what happens after breakage — the film holds fragments together rather than allowing them to scatter. Don’t buy safety film expecting it to prevent breakage; buy it to manage the consequences of breakage.
3. Is safety film visible on the glass?
Clear safety film (4–15 mil) is essentially invisible under normal conditions. At most thicknesses, you cannot detect it at normal viewing distances. Tinted security film is visible in the same way as any window tint. When in doubt, view a sample panel in the installation conditions before specifying.
4. What is film mil thickness and why does it matter?
One mil equals 1/1000 of an inch (0.0254mm). In safety film, thickness correlates broadly with performance: 4 mil for basic fragment retention, 6–8 mil for standard security, 10–15 mil for blast applications. 5. What is EN 12600 and do I need it?
EN 12600 is the European standard for safety glazing impact performance. If you’re in the UK or EU, safety film specified for code-required safety glazing locations should carry EN 12600 certification at the appropriate class (typically B1 or B2). 6. What’s the difference between EN 12600 and LPS 1270?
EN 12600 tests a single impact (human body fall simulation) — it’s a safety standard. LPS 1270 tests sustained tool attack over time — it’s a forced entry resistance standard. For safety code compliance, EN 12600 is the relevant standard. For security applications (smash-and-grab, forced entry), LPS 1270 is the relevant standard. Many projects require both.
About Installation
7. Does safety film need frame attachment?
For fragment retention (accidental safety) purposes: no, the film alone provides this. For forced entry resistance (security purposes): yes, frame attachment is essential. Without frame attachment, a security film installation can be defeated by pushing the intact glass-film unit inward after breaking the glass. Always specify frame attachment for security applications.
8. What’s the difference between attachment tape and wet glazing for frame attachment?
Attachment tape (PAT) is a structural adhesive tape bonding the film edge to the frame — simpler, faster, no cure time required. Wet glazing uses structural silicone to bond the film edge to the frame — more robust, required for blast applications, elastic energy absorption. 9. Can safety film be installed on double-glazed windows?
Yes, with appropriate product selection. Film with high absorption applied to sealed double-glazed units (IGUs) can cause thermal stress cracking. 10. Can I install safety film myself?
For simple residential applications (small flat panels, basic fragment retention), DIY installation is achievable. For commercial applications, security applications (where frame attachment is required), or any glazing where installation quality is the margin of safety — use a professional installer. Poor installation reduces performance significantly.
11. How long does installation take?
A professional crew typically installs 50–100sqm of safety film per day. A 200sqm commercial ground-floor security installation takes 2–3 days. Most installations can be completed without closing the building.
12. Will installation disrupt building occupants?
Interior safety film installation is minimally disruptive. Rooms are typically available within 1–2 hours of installation. No external scaffolding required for interior application. Floor protection and some furniture movement may be needed, but the work doesn’t require building evacuation.
About Performance
13. How much does safety film slow a forced entry attempt?
Without frame attachment: 10–20 seconds delay beyond unprotected glass (marginal). With frame attachment, 8 mil film: 60–90 seconds. With frame attachment, 12 mil film: 120–180+ seconds. 14. Does safety film protect against bullets?
No. Safety film does not provide ballistic resistance. Ballistic protection requires specifically designed glass-clad polycarbonate or multi-layer laminated ballistic glass. Security film and ballistic glazing are completely different products addressing different threats.
15. Does safety film protect against blast?
Blast film (15 mil+ with structural frame attachment) provides meaningful blast mitigation — holding glass fragments together during blast events and substantially reducing fragment-related injuries. 16. Does safety film improve a window’s sound insulation?
Marginally. Thick safety film (8 mil+) may provide 1–2 dB sound reduction — barely perceptible. For meaningful acoustic improvement, acoustic laminated glass replacement is the appropriate solution.
17. Does safety film block UV?
Yes — quality safety film blocks 99%+ UV regardless of thickness or tint level. This UV protection is a secondary benefit of safety film installation. UV blocking is not a differentiator between safety film tiers.
About Compatibility
18. Can safety film be applied to tempered glass?
Yes. Safety film is compatible with tempered glass. Note: tempered glass already breaks into small blunt cubes (safer than annealed glass shards) — but once broken, provides no barrier. Safety film on tempered glass adds fragment retention and forced entry delay that the glass alone doesn’t provide.
19. Can safety film be applied over existing tinted film?
Not recommended. Film-on-film applications create adhesion problems — the layers may not bond adequately to each other. If upgrading from existing tinted film to safety film, remove the existing film first.
20. Will safety film affect my Low-E glass coating?
Low-E coatings on glass surfaces require compatibility verification before film application. Most safety film is applied to the interior face of the inner glass lite — which may or may not have a Low-E coating. Film that absorbs solar energy can create thermal stress in glass with Low-E coatings on the same surface. Request specific compatibility confirmation from the film manufacturer for your glass type.

21. How much does safety film cost?
Installed cost per square meter (professional installation, Western markets): basic 4 mil safety film $20–$40/sqm; 8 mil security film $40–$65/sqm; 12 mil high-security $65–$100/sqm. 22. Is safety film cheaper than replacing glass with laminated glass?
Significantly cheaper — typically 10–15 times less expensive per square meter. Safety film at $40/sqm vs laminated glass replacement at $300–$600/sqm for comparable areas. 23. Can safety film be specified through public procurement frameworks?
Yes. Safety film is available through Crown Commercial Service (UK), GSA Schedule (US), and equivalent frameworks in many countries. The specification should be performance-based (EN 12600 class, LPS 1270 class) rather than brand-specific. Chinese-manufactured certified film is eligible for public procurement when it meets the specified standard.
About Longevity and Maintenance
24. How long does safety film last?
Interior-applied quality safety film: 10–15 years service life. Quality PET base with UV stabilisers maintains structural integrity and adhesion over this period. Film that has sustained significant impact (even if it didn’t fail) should be inspected and potentially replaced — the structural integrity may be compromised. Annual edge inspection is recommended for security film installations.
25. What maintenance does safety film require?
Clean with pH-neutral, ammonia-free glass cleaner and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive tools. Inspect frame attachment edges annually — early detection of lifting allows resealing before the security benefit is compromised. Do not use high-pressure washing directly at film edges. Beyond this, no maintenance is required.
